ABOUT MANKYCHOPS

The idea of Manky Chops was created in December 2007 in Plimmerton NZ . When Dave Smith and Xoe Hall decided they should start a underground Art Studio in Cuba Street Wellington .

The hunt begun for a suitabe space and within two minutes later with the use of Trademe they found the Spot at 166 Cuba.

The original plan for the studio was to have a place where they and there friends could go hang out and be creative .

After a few months of running this creative space idea's started flowing in from people who were hanging out there . Idea's like ... Lets turn half of the space into a Gallery so we can not only be creative here we can also show our work ..

So soon there after the decision was made to build walls make a Bar and turn Mankychops Studio into the infamous MankyChops Gallery .

MankyChops Gallery was launched on May 29 2008 which attracted peeps from all over the country .

Since the Grand Opening of Manky Chops Gallery It has hosted over 50 Shows .

Most of which were mainly free for the Artist. MankyChops wanted to help grow the wellington Art Scene and Make it easy for unestablished Artists to have a show . Manky Chops also helped Aritists out with sponsorship for there shows and Marketing around the show . .

It is now 2012 and Manky Chops now closed the

Gallery at 166 Cuba Street to focus on having more impact shows at Various Locations around

Wellington and the World .

However Manky Chops still very happy to help out Artists that feel they may need help .

With the Mankychops roots coming from Surfing it was inportant to us to get behind Surfing in Wellington and give something back , Manky Dave AKA Drippy was brought up Groverling around Wellington Beachs with his home beaches being at T Bay, Blacks Beach Plimmerton and Ocean Beach Western Lakes .but was often seen smoking durries at Lyall Bays the Corner . Being involved wth Scholastic Surfing as a Teenager and Spending alot of time in the front seat of a car blasting over the coast to get a dusk session in before it got dark made it important that Mankychops gets amoungst Surfing in NZ .

Over the Past Couple of Years Manky Chops has Sponsord The Wellington Shcolistics Surf Team and produly Supported the Wellington Board Riders Inc. And is currently organsing a Surf Art and Photography Show which will be held Dec 2012 in Wellington .

With a love for Skateboarding ,Skate Art and Freedom of Expression the Skateboarding Element of MankyChops was ineverable

Holding Major Skateboard Art shows and being involved with Deep End and the Bowl a Rama Bowl Riding competion was huge for MankyChops , the support Mankychops gets back from the Wellington Skate Community as a result is amence, and is always a motivation to go bigger

Painting and Drawing the Foundation of which MankyChops was born from

The Manky Chops for fathers were both Artists , Who both Loved to Paint with Oil ,loved the out doors and both who had the disire to Paint Rustec scenes of Old Boats rough seas and the beautiful NZ land Scapes . This passion for Art creept through the Vains of Xoe and Dave which inspired a Artistic Common Ground to which they could enjoy relate to and explore

This exploration soon lead to many amazing artists from all walks of life and from all over the world . Which all now have atleast one thing in common .. MankyChops .

The Name Mankychops is actually a dirty lick in a Guitar .

Music has always played a big part in the evolution of Mankychops , having Tryrone Mc Carthy on our Team with a back ground in Music playing in Bands like Premature Autopsy and Illphonics and Jamming with the best of the best in NZ it was hard not to .

Contributing Musicians Ari and Blair Gracie also help out by introducing new bands to Mankychops

Mankychops gets behind the Wellington Music scene and regulary invites bands to play at various Art Shows .

Mankychops is always keen to help brighten up our

Cities and Towns . Being commisioned by Various

Buisiness owners , Building Owners , Schools and Councils to Paint everthing from Dirty old walls . Dairys

cafe's and Train Stations

The Graphiti Element to Mankychops has not always been pretty . Mankychops was often rediculled about housing young Taggers . this was kind of the Truth however the problem of Tagging in our community has always been a issue .

Kids with the ability to paint with cans is often a faze but with the right influence and attitudes the ones that are serious about it can build a carerr around it .

A few of the Kids that found a home at Mankychops soon learnt the hardway in regards to there tagging habits and finally started understanding why the community was over it . .And what kind of Greif was being brought to Mankychops , remembering Mankychops was designed to be a possitive out let for Artists ,

As the Art form progressed so did relationships between Affiliated Graph Writers .

Whome now are producing Great things on a massive Scale .
